We're proud to launch our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) – a milestone in our ongoing commitment to First Nations peoples.

Across the past four decades we’ve had the privilege of presenting the Festival, touring artists, and building artistic development programs to discover and support emerging performers across all corners of this beautiful, ancient country. Since 2007, our Deadly Funny program has grown participation and representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in comedy, working directly with Traditional Owners to unearth new talent and bring First Nations stories to audiences across the country.

We believe comedy has the power to educate, heal, inspire and unify. Our Innovate RAP is another step forward in this journey.

Kevin Kropinyeri's Kookarki Karnkin painting commissioned for the Festival’s RAP.

Kookarki Karnkin translates as “laughing Kookaburra” in the traditional language of the Ngarrindjeri people of the area now known as the Lower River Murray, Lakes and Coorong region of South Australia. Laughter is healing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Kookaburra is spreading the healing to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples through her laughter and this laughter is contagious.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.
